Wintry Weather Possibility Next Week
Quick update: Wintry weather could be in the forecast for late next week though uncertainty remains high. Model solutions have differed on timing and precipitation type from run-to-run making it difficult to pin down who will see frozen precipitation during that time. The most recent 12Z and 18Z GFS operational runs appear to be the outliers showing no precipitation for NC at all next week.
11:15 PM Update: Precipitation returns to NC in the 00Z GFS run this time as rain/ice mix across ENC. It is still a couple of days away but with most models hinting at wintry precipitation for ENC Thursday/Friday this system could pose serious problems across the area. If the thermal profiles verify, sleet/freezing rain will be the predominate precip type (except for immediate coast) and given the forecast duration accumulations could be significant for the area. This system will need to be monitored closely over the next several days.
11:10 AM Update (Sunday): 12Z GFS still shows wintry precipitation for most of NC with predominate precip type as ice. Chances for significant icing is still possible and we will have to watch this system closely as this could have major impacts for ENC later this week.
I will be keeping an eye on the forecast and will update Sunday with any new information and a detailed forecast as we head into Christmas Day.
