The original ENC Weather Winds legend is preserved unchanged.
Speed and direction tell different parts of the story
The shaded field and numeric labels indicate wind speed, while the directional symbols show the flow across the region. Coastal and inland winds can differ considerably, especially near fronts, sea-breeze boundaries and strong pressure gradients.
Weak surface flow.
Noticeable but generally modest wind.
Increasing effects on exposed areas.
Strong sustained surface flow.
Pay closer attention to gusts and advisories.
Direction names where the wind comes from
A north wind blows from north to south. A southwest wind blows from the southwest toward the northeast. The map's direction layer lets you see changes in the flow that may mark boundaries or changes in the pressure pattern.
